A chronic sinus infection is a sinus infection that recurs frequently or lasts for a prolonged period of time. This is different than an acute sinus infection which has a much shorter duration. Chronic sinus infections have long been thought to be caused by bacteria. This has long been the common thought process among health professionals.
Since the mainstream medical belief of the cause of chronic sinus infection has been focused on bacteria as the cause, the most commonly prescribed treatment has been and still is antibiotics.
In 1999 the Mayo Clinic did a study that turned the common thought process regarding the cause of most chronic sinus infections upside down. The Mayo Clinic discovered that almost all cases of chronic sinus infection were the result of fungus in the sinus cavities.
If fungus is the cause of almost all cases of chronic sinus infection and the common treatment is to prescribe antibiotics, then almost all cases of chronic sinus infection have been and are still being treated incorrectly.
So those of you who suffer from recurring or constant sinus infections should take heed and realize that if you are taking the advice of your doctor and continuing to use antibiotics over and over again, you most likely will never get rid of your sinus infection. This is assuming that the cause of your chronic sinus infection is really fungus and not bacterial.
One would guess that once you have taken antibiotics and have not been able to rid yourself of the sinus infection, you are most likely dealing with something other than a bacterial sinus infection.
It would seem that a different type of sinus infection treatment would be in order. If the cause of your chronic sinus infection is fungal in nature, you would most likely want to target the cause of the infection with something that will destroy or remove the fungus.
There are many natural sinus infection remedies that you can find that may be able to help relieve your sinus infection symptoms and hopefully get rid of the infection altogether. Some common remedies include things such as using a neti pot to rinse your sinus cavities and hopefully remove the fungal buildup inside of the sinuses.
Another natural remedy is to use a colloidal silver solution to mist into the sinus cavities and kill the fungus thus leaving the sinuses free of the fungus that is causing the chronic sinus infections to recur.
The Mayo Clinic is currently working on a new type of treatment whereby they will deliver some type of anti-fungal medicine into the sinuses to kill the fungus and relieve the sinus symptoms.
If you don’t know whether your sinus infection is fungal, viral or bacterial, you can visit your health care provider to get a proper diagnosis. They can run certain tests on you to help determine what the exact cause of your sinus infection is. These tests can include a CAT scan or a culture of the infection.
Once you have a proper diagnosis you will be able to treat your chronic sinus infection the proper way. You shouldn’t just assume that your chronic sinus infection is due to bacteria, but rather you should consult your physician and obtain a proper diagnosis and then you won’t have to guess.
